This year we have a very special Guest Speaker:

Adventurer and author, Steve Bell is an author and former Everest mountain guide who finds compelling stories from his life. His first book, Virgin on Insanity, is a coming of age memoir, but his talk will cover his more recent Everest experiences, including the first British guided ascent of Everest in 1993.

In his talk, he will tell his remarkable story of survival set against the loss of his friend, Bruce Herrod.

‘Over 30 years of Wilderness I can tell you that yours was ‘up there’ amongst the top rank speakers we have had.’ Wilderness Lectures, 2016.

Wow, what a journey….told in a very unassuming and humble way. Steve had our clients on the edge of their seats.’ Financial Lifestyle Partners, 2015.

Steve will also be selling and signing his books on the night,  $35 each ($10 off the list price) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Virgin-Insanity-Coming-Toughest-Mountains/dp/1910240834

Also on the night:

  • The Ian Ryan Club Award will be presented.
  • Second hand equipment sale. (Bring it along, someone may buy it. Label it with your name and the asking price.)
  • DVD’s and other activities for the kids.
  • Lots of talk. It’s a great night to meet members and get fired up for the coming season.
  • New and old members most welcome.

A number of Birkebeiners were selected in National Teams to compete overseas in 2016/17.

The club provided some financial assistance to each athlete and in return they are required to submit a report on returning to Australia. Thanks Phil and Jarah for the following reports.

The Last King – The Birkebeiner Movie (SBS On Demand)

Norway has made a movie of the Birkebeiner Story which was released in February 2016. The language is Norwegian but has English subtitles. It runs for 135 minutes.

It’s available for free via SBS On Demand through its internet streaming service.

Click this link <http://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/video/898914371586/the-last-king>. Once on the Page you will need to sign up to the SBS On Demand service (its free) to be able to watch it unless of course you are already signed up.

Before watching read a brief history — I strongly suggest you read the three page brief history of the Birkebeiner Story prior to viewing the movie so you will better understand the story. Click [HERE] to read.

BackgroundIn the year 1206 Norway is raged by civil war. The King’s illegitimate infant son, Håkon Håkonsson, which half the kingdom wants killed off, is guarded in secrecy by two men. A story which changed the course of the country’s history.

The skiing scenes are stunning.
