The aim of the Junior Joey program is to provide young children with a positive cross-country experience where participation and fun are the main elements. It usually involves activities such as as novelty races, bumps and jumps, fun games and activities, snowgaines, and family dress-up days.
The Junior Joey program runs during the snow season with on snow sessions over the weekend depending on demand.
Junior Birkies
Target Audience - club members from grade 4 to year 12 who are intermediate to advanced cross-country skiers.
The aim of Junior Birkies is to allow children to improve their technique and further develop their personal skiing skills and learn more about cross-country ski training and racing.
We usually run dryland training on roller skis during Term 2 at Mount Beauty Secondary College plus a Junior Birkie Camp during the snow season and regular weekend training.
Adult Instruction
Target Audience - adult club members who are intermediate to advanced skiers
We offer free (or miminal cost) club adult instruction clinics with our club overseas coach (or local coach if our club overseas coach is not available) and may also offer hoppet training group sessions to club members before the Kangaroo Hoppet.
Birkebeiner Bush Search and Rescue (BSAR) Group
Target Audience - Club members (full or associate members) who are experience walkers/skiers or campers who are interested in being involved in bush rescues around Mount Beauty can get involved in our Bush Search and Rescue Group.
They must:
- have skills in areas such as first aid, radio communications or navigation.
- fiitness/ ability to go all day (not flat out), carrying your own food and camping equipment.
- provisions and equipment to be self-sufficient for 3 days searching.
- able to attend S & R Training Sessions locally and/or organised by BSAR - such as 'General training sessions' and the 'Steep, Snow and Ice' training weekend.
Our group of volunteers are called out by Police and BSAR Officers via our designated club contact, who then calls out Birkebeiner BSAR members.to be part of search groups.
A search group may be made up of:
- A group leader (experienced searcher)
- A radio operator
- A navigator/ GPS user
- A minimum number of searchers
If you are interested please reach out to our club secretary to learn more about how to get involved as we need to endorse suitable applicants and their names are then put forward to BSAR. Our Search and Rescue Birkie Sub-committee meets once a year to confirm contacts, search practices etc. Four members are needed for the clubs BSAR sub-committee.
