  • To provide for its members the opportunity for the enjoyment of skiing.
  • To associate with other organisations with similar objectives.
  • To conduct social activities.
  • To assist in searches for persons lost in bushland areas of the state and to maintain a Search and Rescue group.

Our club house is located in Falls Creek just beyond Windy Corner at the start of the cross country ski trails.  It's a day shelter where we have a small kitchen, bathroom and changing facilities, play area for kids, seating for around 40 people.

What's Nordic or Cross Country Skiing?

Cross country skiing is a fantastic winter sport that is easy to learn and will stay with you for life. Whether you are looking for a healthy recreational activity, to keep fit during winter, snow-fun for the whole family, an adrenaline rush, winter adventures or racing challenges, cross country skiing has something for everyone.

Classic skiing on groomed trails in a resort like Falls Creek is usually the best starting point for most beginners. By combining this with ski play, to improve agility and balance on skis, beginners can rapidly progress. With good balance and weight transfer skiers can progress quickly to skating. Another pathway is to explore the options outside Falls Creek resort, ski touring out to a hut such as Wallace's Hut or finding untracked backcountry slopes. When the snow conditions are right, the lightweight nature of track skiing and the adventure of skiing out into Australian's national parks can be combined. Try it all and find out what you like best.

Why is our club named Birkebeiner?

Our club name "Birkebeiner" originates from the 13th century in Norway and refers to a group of warriors who tied birch bark around their legs for warmth and protection, hence the name "birch leggers" or "birch bark leggers". The name was initially used as a derogatory term by their rivals, but the Birkebeiners embraced it, and it now symbolizes resilience and strength in the face of adversity.   The Birkebeiner story about the historical journey of the Birkebeiners who carried the young Haakon IV (pictured below) and the Birkebeiner name name have resonated beyond Norway, inspiring similar races and events, such as the American Birkebeiner and was why our club is named the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club.
